Bio

Kat MacKenzie

Kat's music has been described as velvet and thunder, "sort of bohemian punk, sort of baroque rock, dream pop, shoegaze, gothic folk and post punk all once...an atmosphere that feels as sinewy hard as it is whispery witchy."

Kat loves grungy electric guitars, deep bass licks, folk songs with alot of minor chords, and atmospheric ethereal synth and guitar sounds.  She has been compared to PJ Harvey or Kate Bush and has vocals with bluesy sounds but also high vocal trills like Cocteau Twins.

Her music is influenced by Chelsea Wolfe, the Cure, and Dead Can Dance...by the grunge movement with Pearl Jam and Nirvana...and by the ambient style of music she plays at work.

She is also influenced by the glitter and lyricism of Taylor Swift and by her study of poetry and creative writing in college and at NYC's St Mark's Poetry Project and the New School.

She creates music influenced by literature, the fantasy and sci fi genre, mythology and folklore.  Kat is an avid reader and this is apparent in her lyrics and themes.

Kat hopes to embody female strength, integrity, and imagination as a person and as a songwriter. She believes music and art are a place to let go and feel...that there is healing in allowing different emotions to move through you instead of them stagnating within...and music and art are a healthy way to do that.   She also believes that listeners who resonate with a song she writes can have a cathartic experience when they listen.

So there is healing and joy, in listening to songs that have alot of gritty emotion...not only because it allows you to let pent up emotions move through you, causing relief and psychological renewal,  but because you realize you are not alone in having big emotions.  They are just a part of the experience of being human.

She invites you to listen and follow more of her journey.  Thank you for watching and listening!
